Get your poodle skirts and leathers on and Spin Out

Quite a few locals in Camden still recall the 1950s and 1960s – when urbanisation was still at arm’s length, the internet was non-existent and rock ’n’ roll was making its debut. The Spin Out event from February 20-22 is set to capture those moments, when life was a little simpler and slower, and the music vibrant and rocking.

Spin Out will feature live perfor- mances along Argyle Street,Camden, with many local pubs and clubs joining in the mood.
Melissa Musgrave from the Spirit of Camden organising com- mittee said the event was about going back to the village’s “heyday” of community engagement while also pumping money back into the local economy.

Funding to stage the two-day event, was provided through the NSW Government’s 24 Economy Uptown Grant, along with support
from Camden Council and local businesses. “It’s about encouraging people to come to town for tourism, boosting the economy and enhancing both self and community,” Ms Musgrave said.

Many residents remember the era well – so fellas whatever your age, bring out the leather jacket and denim jeans and puff up that hair. For the ladies, poodle skirts, petti- coats and saddle shoes are back in fashion. A decade later the look became a little more slick for the ladies – short skirts and boots, and the gents, slicked back their hair and donned the paisley shirts.

Visitors to the two-day event can expect a wide range of entertainment that will appeal to all ages. It’s sure to fascinate the younger generation and, for the older crowd, it’s a step back down memory lane.

Events will be held throughout Camden village – along Argyle Street, in pubs and clubs, and at other venues including Camden
Museum and library, which will present a pictorial display of 1950s–1960s Camden. Ticketed events will also be held at Camden Civic Centre on Friday, February 20.

Here’s a snapshot of what to expect on Saturday, February 21 from 9am, a Classic Car Show in John Street, Retro Markets, and performances by the Hot Potato Band – a dynamic 10-piece brass band playing throughout the main street.

At The Estate from 10am on Saturday there will be a This Is Your Life panel including a well-known pioneer of Australian rockabilly
Lonnie Lee, followed at 12.30pm by the Modern Muse Pin-Up Pageant, where the fashions of the era come
to life.

More than 30 separate events will take place across the weekend, most of them free. There will be
music to enjoy and unwind with at venues including Camden Hotel, Camden RSL, Camden Sports Club, The Crown, The Royal, Plough and Harrow, Barenz and The Estate.
